What to keep at the end of a roofing job

Published

A roofing handover should explain the work completed and give you the documents needed to care for the roof and discuss any later concern. Keep the original quote, approved variations and final invoice together. They provide the record of the agreed scope and any changes made during the job.

Record what was installed or repaired

Ask for the material and product information relevant to the work. For a repair, keep a description of the defect addressed and the area covered. For replacement, record the main roofing specification and included components. If parts of the roof were outside the scope, ask for that boundary to remain clear in the final record.

Keep warranty terms separate

Manufacturer warranties and workmanship arrangements can cover different matters and carry different conditions. Keep the supplied terms and contact details rather than relying on a verbal statement that the roof is "covered". Ask how a future concern should be reported and what information will be needed.

Ask about care and follow-up

The appropriate care depends on the product, installation and site conditions. Ask for relevant manufacturer information and any agreed maintenance advice. Do not assume a freshly completed roof can be walked on safely by an untrained person. Roof access, cleaning and future inspection need appropriate arrangements.

Identify unfinished or separate items

Confirm whether internal reinstatement, another trade's work or an agreed follow-up remains outstanding. Note who is responsible and how attendance will be arranged. If a concealed finding changed the job, retain the approval and explanation with the final invoice. A clean site and a paid invoice do not by themselves document every item discussed at the beginning.

A useful handover file

  • The final scope and approved variations.
  • Product and material details.
  • Applicable documents and warranty terms.
  • Care information and follow-up arrangements.
  • A contact pathway for future concerns.

For an enquiry about a later leak or defect, send the suburb, the work history and the current symptom. That allows the next assessment to start with a clear record rather than assumptions about what the earlier job covered.
